Why Nuremberg?
Through Germany to the Nations
Germany has a rich and complicated history. The Protestant Reformation began here, and Martin Luther's translation of the Bible helped make Scripture accessible to ordinary people. Moravian missionaries later left Germany to take the Gospel around the world. Germany has also lived through some of the darkest chapters of modern history before eventually experiencing reunification.
We believe God is still writing Germany's story.
DTS in Nuremberg is an opportunity to become part of that story, whether Germany is your home or a place God has brought you for this season. You'll learn about Germany's history and heritage, build relationships with people from Germany and other nations, and see how God is moving in Germany today.
YWAM Nuremberg is part of that movement. Our traveling teams encourage and equip youth groups and churches across Germany to engage with God's mission. At the same time, worship nights and other outreaches create opportunities to serve and connect with people right here in Nuremberg.
We don't go alone
DTS brings together people from different countries, backgrounds and experiences. You'll live, learn, worship and serve alongside your DTS community throughout the five months.
These are your people to celebrate with, learn from, struggle with and grow alongside.
Your outreach team will leave Nuremberg to go to the nations and partner with local churches, missionaries and ministries.
You will:
- Share the Gospel
- Pray for people
- Serve local communities
- Support churches and missionaries
- Work with children and young people
- Worship God among the nations
The exact location and ministry activities will vary, but every outreach is an opportunity to encounter God, see Him move, and help others encounter Him too as you serve, share Jesus while living in another nation.
Where will we go?
Outreach locations are chosen before each DTS begins. During the first couple of weeks, you'll find out where the teams are going and be placed on an outreach team.
As a YWAM Nuremberg community, we currently have a particular focus on:
-
Germany 🇩🇪
We are contending for a fresh youth missions movement to flow through Germany. -
Unreached peoples & the 10/40 Window
We want to see the Gospel reach people and places where Jesus is not yet known. -
Ethiopia & the Horn of Africa 🇪🇹
We see Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa as a missionary-sending region and want to champion and support the local church as it steps into its missional calling. -
Central Asia
We believe God is inviting us to continue investing in this region.
This doesn't mean every DTS goes to every location. Your outreach location and ministry focus will depend on the particular DTS and the teams being formed.
Could DTS be for you?
DTS might be your next step if...
✅ You want to grow closer to Jesus
✅ You're curious about missions
✅ You want to explore your calling
✅ You want Christian community
✅ You want to share your faith
✅ You want to step outside your comfort zone
✅ You want to meet people from around the world
You don't need to...
❌ Know exactly what you're called to
❌ Have years of ministry experience
❌ Have traveled internationally
❌ Have your whole future figured out
You won't always feel ready. That's okay.

Questions? We've got answers.
DTS is a big decision, and you probably have questions. Here are answers to some of the things people most often want to know before applying.
-
Can I do DTS in Germany if I don't speak German?
Yes. YWAM Nuremberg's DTS is bilingual in English and German. Teaching is primarily in English, with live German translation from the front of the room. English is the main language during Outreach, as it is usually the common language between our teams and the churches and missionaries we work with. You don't need to speak German to participate in the school.
-
Can international students do DTS at YWAM Nuremberg?
Yes. YWAM Nuremberg welcomes students from Germany and other countries. Our DTS is typically made up of roughly one-third German students, one-third American students, and one-third students from other countries, including across Europe, Canada, Australia, and Brazil.
If you're coming from outside Germany, you'll need to make sure you meet the entry and visa requirements that apply to your nationality.
-
What makes YWAM Nuremberg's DTS different?
YWAM Nuremberg's DTS brings together an international community, life in Germany, and a focus on going to the nations. You'll get opportunities to serve locally and across Germany, and then take what you're learning into a cross-cultural Outreach in Africa or Asia. The goal is not just to prepare you for one Outreach, but to help you discover what it means to follow Jesus and live on mission wherever He leads.
-
What is DTS really like?
DTS is an immersive experience of learning, community, discipleship, and practical ministry. Your days will include teaching, worship, prayer, meals together, small groups, practical responsibilities and ministry.
You'll spend three months in Nuremberg before heading out with your team for two months of cross-cultural Outreach. What you learn in the classroom is meant to shape how you live, serve and follow Jesus. -
Do I need missions experience to do DTS?
No. You don't need previous missions or ministry experience to apply for DTS. DTS is designed to help you grow as a disciple of Jesus, learn to share your faith, and explore what it means to live out the Great Commission. You can come with lots of experience or very little.
-
Do I need to know that I want to be a missionary?
No. You don't need to have your future or calling figured out before DTS. Some students already know they want to pursue missions, while others come because they want to grow closer to Jesus and explore what God might have for their future. DTS is a place to take that next step and discover more.
-
What is the YWAM Nuremberg community like?
YWAM Nuremberg is a community of missionaries: families, students and young adults. During DTS, you'll live and learn alongside other students and staff, sharing meals, worship, teaching, practical ministry and everyday life.
Community is a big part of how we do discipleship. We want to create a place where people can encounter God, see Him move, and help others do the same. You'll celebrate together, learn from one another, and grow through the challenges of doing life and ministry together.
-
What is Nuremberg like?
Nuremberg is a historic city in southern Germany with around half a million people. It's big enough to have plenty going on, but small enough to get around easily. You'll find coffee shops, great international restaurants, climbing halls and gyms, parks, and a beautiful old city with a castle. It's a place where you can experience everyday German life while being part of an international community.
-
How much does DTS cost?
The total cost of DTS at YWAM Nuremberg is approximately 5300€–5900€. This includes the 60€ application fee, 2700€ Lecture Phase and 2500€–3200€ Outreach Phase. The cost includes meals, housing during the Lecture Phase and Outreach, and flights for Outreach. The final cost depends primarily on the Outreach location and flight costs.
-
Can I fundraise for DTS?
Yes. Many DTS students raise some or all of their DTS costs through friends, family, churches and their wider community. YWAM Nuremberg also provides a Fundraising Guide with practical ideas and steps to help you get started. We don't want finances to be the thing that stops you from exploring DTS.
-
Do I need a visa to do DTS in Germany?
Probably not, but it depends on your nationality. We schedule our DTS dates to fit within the 90/180-day Schengen rule, which works for the majority of students who can enter Germany without a visa, including students from the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Singapore and Colombia, among others.
If your nationality requires a visa to enter Germany, you will need to apply for one. Visa paperwork can only begin after you have been accepted into DTS. You can contact the DTS team for details and guidance on the process.
