Simple Questions to Help You Read the Bible

Written by Nadja | June 23, 2025

In my last post, I introduced the Inductive Bible Study method, a great way to read the Bible without jumping to conclusions or applying our modern worldview too quickly. Instead, this method helps us let the Bible speak for itself through three main steps: Observation, Interpretation, and Application. These steps, when practiced prayerfully, help us discover God’s timeless truth and how it still applies to our lives today.

If the full method feels a little overwhelming, don’t worry! Today I want to share a simplified version with basic questions you can ask while reading any passage of the Bible. These questions still follow the structure of the Inductive Method and are a great starting point for anyone wanting to go deeper in God’s Word, whether you're new to Bible study or just looking for a fresh approach.

A Simple Guide to the Inductive Bible Study Method

🕵️‍♀️ Observation

What does the passage say? This step is all about slowing down and really seeing what’s in front of us. Instead of jumping to “what does this mean for me?”, we take time to notice the details.

Here are some helpful questions to ask:

  • Who are the main people? Who is talking or listening?

  • What is happening? What’s the background?

  • When is this happening? What’s the historical setting?

  • Where is this happening? What places are mentioned?

  • Why is this happening? Are any reasons given?

  • What happened right before this? What’s the context?

  • How did these events come about? How are people responding?

  • Are there any words or phrases that stand out or get repeated?

🧠 Interpretation

What does the passage mean? Now that we’ve seen the details, we ask deeper questions to understand the meaning, especially for the original audience.

Ask yourself:

  • What is the main message or theme? Are there any symbols or metaphors?

  • Why do you think this is in the Bible? What does it teach about God, people, or life?

  • How would people back then have understood this? What was happening in their culture or history?

  • Are there other Bible verses that connect to this one? How do they help explain it?

🕊️ Timeless Truth

What principle stands out? At this point, we look for a truth about God, His kingdom, or the Christian life that is true in every culture and time.

Ask:

  • What principles or truths are still relevant today?

❤️ Application

How can I respond to this passage? Once we’ve discovered a timeless truth, we let it transform us. The Bible is meant to be lived out, not just studied.

Ask:

  • How can I use what I’ve read in my life? What changes should I make?

  • What is God saying to me through this passage?

  • How can I share this with others?

  • Are there any promises or commands I need to believe or follow?

  • What specific action can I take this week? How can I stay accountable?

Final Thought

You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to ask good questions. God wants to reveal Himself to you, and He does, through His Word and His Spirit. As you read, stay curious, stay prayerful, and stay open to being changed.

Let the Bible speak.
Let God speak.
Let your life reflect what you’ve discovered.
