Is Worship Necessary for Missions?

Is Worship Necessary for Missions?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably wondered if worship is necessary in missions. In my experience, the answer is simply, yes. Worship is necessary for missions because when we worship we get a heart for God’s people and His cause. More importantly, when we act on that revelation, we become missionaries.

FOUR THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE WORSHIP GOD:

  1. We focus on who He is

  2. We become aware of His presence

  3. God delights in us

  4. He reveals his heart to us

Gazing upon the beauty of God and bringing Him the honor and praise He rightfully deserves takes the focus off of us and solely unto Jesus. God’s presence lives within us and as we worship, we fully become aware of the weight His presence carries. Suddenly, it isn’t our thoughts, concerns, and worries that consume us; we take them captive and delight in the goodness of our Father. We’re His children, who He loves, and as we delight in Him, He delights in us. I have noticed that it’s in these moments that God reveals his heart for us as individuals and even for His children at large. God is looking for people that come before Him with broken spirits, seeking nothing more than His face and His will, and when He finds them He is prepared to demonstrate His power through them. Just look at the story of Nehemiah for example (or David, or Paul).

This is where missions comes in.

Without worshiping God and gaining a heart for His people and His cause, missions simply wouldn’t exist. Worship is necessary for missions, but it is only when we act upon what God tells us, and faithfully believe He will work through us, that we can actually make a difference. I’ve personally experienced times during community or individual worship where God has given me a heart for specific people or people groups and as I’ve asked God more about them and done my research, my heart grows for them and with it, the desire to reach them and tell them how God loves them and wants to get to know them. It’s crazy amazing to me that it all started with a simple choice to take time to glorify and honor God.

Worship is necessary for missions, but it is only when we act upon what God tells us, and faithfully believe He will work through us, that we can actually make a difference.

Worship is vital to missions because through it, we get a heart for His people and for His cause which is a foundation of being a missionary. It’s up to us then, if we will follow where He leads us.
